Dhofar

Dhofar governorate occupies an area of 99,300 km² (the largest governorate in the Sultanate of Oman) and has about 458,734 population. It consists of Al-Mazyūnah (9,261 population), Ḍalkūt (2,988), Mirbat (16,307), Muqshin (857), Rakhyūt (5,049), Sadah (5,944), Salalah (374,582), Shalim and the Hallaniyat Islands (4,792), Taqah (20,876), and Thumrait (16,966). Salalah is the largest city, as well as the capital of the Governorate.

Dhofar is a large province with many amazing attractions including Sultan Qaboos Mosque, Nabi Ayoub's Tomb, Teeq Cave and Tawi Ateer Sinkhole, Wadi Darbat, Frankincense Museum, Al Hafah Souq, Khawr Sawli Lagoon, Khawr Al Baleed, Khawr Al Qurum and Khor Ruri Lagoons, Samhan Mountain, Hot Springs, Al Husn Souq, Dhofar Beach, and many other places. Dhofar has a tropical climate that is directly exposed to the Khareef which means South East monsoon from mid-June to mid-September. The weather is cool and humid during the summer due to the Monsoon clouds, while the winter months are warm except for periods when cold winds from the northern deserts cause heavy and prolonged dust storms and a sharp fall in temperature. Heavy seasonal rainfall in Dhofar contrasts sharply with the neighboring barren Empty Quarter Desert. You can enjoy activities such as watching flamingos in Sawli, Al Baleed, Ad Dahreez, Atheeb, and Salalah lagoons; finding frankincense, traditional Omani dress, and perfumes in the souqs; 4*4 driving, camel riding, and camping out on the Empty Quarter Desert; having a picnic at the beach and cave sites; watching birds and turtles in the Island and many other interesting things to do.
